Mariners Sweep Avalanche
The VIU Mariners will play for PACWEST gold
The VIU Mariners have punched their ticket to the gold medal match after a three-set sweep of the COTR Avalanche 25-18, 26-24 and 25-22.
It was the only upset of the tournament as the Mariners also punch their ticket to the CCAA national championship at Humber College in Toronto.
The Mariners played a complete match with several players contributing on the offensive side including Daniel Mascarenhas, Lucas Torres and Rylan Van Kooten. Mascarenhas was a major factor in the middle and Torres attacked everything that came his way along with his massive jump serve. He was named the Player of the Match.
The Avalanche didn’t have their full complement of weapons but played hard throughout the match. Vittor Mateus was named the Player of the Match as he quarterbacked the offense. Gustavo Bertoli was very good in the setback.
The Mariners will now face the Camosun Chargers in a rematch of last year’s PACWEST gold medal while the Avalanche will play the Douglas Royals for bronze.
Following the match Ryan Watters talk with Mariners head coach Abe Avender.
