Mariners Blank Cascades
The VIU Mariners are off to the PACWEST gold medal match after a sweep of the UFV Cascades
The reigning PACWEST provincial champion VIUMariners advance to tomorrow’s gold medal matchup against the Camosun Chargers after beating the University of Fraser Valley Cascades 3-0.
The Mariners player of the game was awarded to third year outside hitter Danielle Groenendijk who racked in 13 kills. Second year outside hitter Karoline Tormena finished with 14 kills while third year setter Shelby Dorman-Banks picked up 12 digs.
The first and second sets both got off to relatively close starts as both teams competed until the score got to 11-8 in the Mariners favour. It was then that the Mariners went on respective 14-5 and 14-8 runs to secure the first set 25-13 and the seconds set 25-16.
The Mariners then secured the win with a 25-13 victory which locked in the 3-0 sweep.
The Cascades player of the game was awarded to fifth year left side Chelsea Kidd who racked in 10 kills and eight digs. Cascades left sides Amanda Matsui and Kirsten McBride each finished with 10 digs.
Tomorrow afternoon the Mariners will play in a gold medal rematch five years in the making as they take on the second seed Camosun Chargers.
The Mariners and Chargers last met in 2014-15, when the Mariners came back from a two-set deficit to take home their 15th PACWEST provincial championship.
