Championship Saturday at the PACWEST basketball tournament opens with the women’s bronze medal game when the Royals and Blues tip off.
It’s the hardest medal to get motivated for in sports, after both teams suffered a loss in their semi-final on Friday. That said, once tip off happens, competitive juices take over and both teams want to end their season with a victory.
During the regular season these two schools met four times with the Royals winning three of them, but each game was close. Their last meeting was the weekend of January 24-25, and the lone Blues win in the seasonal series came on October 19th in an eight-point victory.
The Royals, who won gold last season are looking for their second consecutive PACWEST medal. They dropped a heartbreaking game yesterday to the CBC Bearcats by seven points, shooting 31% from the field. They showed great heart, falling behind early before coming back with steady defence holding the Bearcats to just 26% shooting.
The Blues have a quicker turnaround after losing their semi-final game to the VIU Mariners last night by a 67-53 score. They found life later in the game, outscoring the Mariners in the fourth quarter but the mountain was just too high to climb. They are vying for their first bronze medal since 2012 but have won seven other PACWEST medals since.
