The men’s side of the bracket opens Championship Saturday with the bronze medal contest as the Chargers and Bearcats will look to end their season with a win.
Both schools fell in their semi-final match on Friday to push them into this bronze medal game.
The Chargers have a very quick turnaround falling in double overtime to the Capilano Blues in the lone upset of the tournament. It was a tight, physical back and forth game with not a lot of easy buckets. The Chargers’ David Finch hit a shot in the dying seconds of regulation to force the game into overtime before an extra OT session was needed to determine the winner. They shot 32% in the loss and 18% from the three-point line as their sharp shooters couldn’t find an offensive rhythm. Izzy Helman led the way with a game high 30 points.
Friday afternoon the Bearcats put up a good fight against the top seeded VIU Mariners but ultimately fell by 14 points. They had a tough game shooting the basketball connecting at 28% with every shot seemingly getting contested. Cam Carter was their leader on the floor, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
During the regular season the Chargers and Bearcats met four times with both teams winning twice, setting up the rubber match in this bronze medal game.
They last met in the playoffs on this very day, in this very game in 2008 with the Chargers holding on for a 95-81 victory to win bronze. The Bearcats only PACWEST medal was a bronze in 2007.
