The CBC Bearcats win their first ever PACWEST playoff game and advance to play for gold
CBC Bearcats – 57
Douglas College Royals – 50
The CBC Bearcats survived a tough assignment Friday afternoon, earning a 57-50 win over the Douglas College Royals to advance to the PACWEST gold-medal game.
Scoring proved difficult for both sides throughout the game and CBC’s early edge was created mostly from the free throw line. It took Douglas nearly five minutes to get on the board with a free throw from Lauren Clements.
The game developed some flow in the second quarter with Player of the Year Elissa Vreugdenhil scoring getting three buckets and Karishma Rai and Denise Medoza hitting threes for the Royals but CBC took a 32-27 lead to the break.
Scoring almost ground to a halt in the third quarter with Douglas not scoring for the first six minutes of the second half, breaking the drought on a three from Rai. They didn’t allow CBC much either however, and the Bearcats found no easy buckets and got almost nothing from three-point territory, ending up 1-13 on the day.
Douglas took a brief lead on a Lauren Clements layup, making it 43-41 Royals and tied the game at 46 on a three from Rai with over four minutes to go but managed just two buckets from there and went just 2-of-8 from the line in the final frame.
Vreugdenhil was a force late for CBC scoring eight of her 18 in the fourth quarter, plus grabbing eight of her 14 boards, including four on the offensive glass.
CBC moves on to the tournament final where they will face the winner of the Capilano-VIU game. Saturday’s gold-medal tilt is a 5:30 p.m. start.
