Familiar Playoff Foes
The VIU Mariners tip off against the Capilano Blues in a women's semifinal
#4 Capilano Blues vs. #1 VIU Mariners – Friday February 28, 5:30pm | WATCH HERE
A pair of schools that are very familiar with each other in the postseason meet again on Friday in a women’s semifinal.
As the top seed, the Mariners earned a bye into the semifinal and watched the Blues play a solid quarterfinal beating the Langara Falcons 77-51 with a dominating performance on Thursday. Their offense was led by Mia Parkin and Maddy Coffin who will need the same type of individual efforts today against a much better Mariners team.
In their four regular season matchups the Mariners won all four in convincing fashion with an average margin of victory of 31 points. In two of their four wins, the Mariners kept the Blues offence under 45 points in the game.
On the offensive side Harriette Mackenzie led all PACWEST scorers averaging 17.9 points a game and snagged over 10 rebounds. No other Mariner averaged double figures on the season, but as a team they scored 76.4 points and shot over 37%.
Last season both the Marines and Blues were upset in the semifinals and would play for bronze, in which the Mariners won.
The winner of today’s game will not only play for gold tomorrow but will earn a spot at the CCAA national championship tournament as well. The loser will find themselves back in the bronze medal game for the second straight season.
