Royals Survive Chargers Scare
The Douglas Royals advance with a quarterfinal victory
Douglas Royals 67
Camosun Chargers 61
The third seeded Dougla Royals survived a scare from the sixth seeded Chargers to advance to the semi-finals on Friday in a women’s quarterfinal.
The Royals used full court pressure early on to take the lead, frustrating the Chargers but still only led by just three points at the half. The Chargers made second half adjustments, breaking the press and used the three-point shot to keep the game close and even take the lead. However, it didn’t last long as the Royals used their stifling defence to create turnovers and steals to regain their lead and ultimately scoring the win.
Laini Glover was terrific, and she and Kanda Diop of the Chargers battled all game down low with both players being named the Players of the Game. It was Glover’s defence that took easy shots away and made life difficult down low for Diop in the second half. On the offensive side she collected 10 points, all in the second half en route to the win. Diop finished with a game high 17 points.
As a team the Royals shot 40% form the field with Mackenzie Dalphond dropping 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The Chargers countered with 35% from the field with Elli Cailliau coming off the bench to add 16 points.
With the win the Royals advance to Friday’s semi-final where they will meet the #2 CBC Bearcats at 12:30pm.
