The PACWEST basketball championship tournament opens on Thursday afternoon with the third seeded Royals taking on the sixth seed Chargers with 26 points separating them in the standings. This is the second consecutive season they have met in a quarterfinal.
During the regular season the Royals swept the Chargers in four games with the average margin of victory by 29.7 points a game.
The Royals (17-7) come into the playoffs winning four of their last six, including a pair of wins at Camosun. They shot 35% from the field this season and scored an average of 73 points a game. Mackenzie Dalphond has been their leading scorer this year with 11.7 a game and Lauren Clements has been solid as well with 10.2. On the defensive side, they have been very good, not allowing the opposition to get into the flow of most games. They allowed 61 points a contest and created over 23 turnovers on average and over 11 steals.
The Chargers (4-20) are lucky to be in the postseason, finding a way to win two of their last three games to leapfrog the Okanagan Coyotes into the sixth spot. Their win this past Friday night at Capilano clinched the final berth.
On the offensive side they have struggled to score points this season averaging 57.4 a game and are shooting 31% from the field. Sevene Grewal has been the leading scorer averaging 12 a game and Kanda Diop chips in with 9.9 a game and snags over 10 rebounds.
They will need to play their best game of the season on Thursday afternoon to upset the defending PACWEST gold medalists.
The winner will advance to the semi-finals on Friday to meet the #2 CBC Bearcats.
