The last time these two schools met in the post season Slumdog Millionaire won Best Picture at the Oscars, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida won the Song of the Year at the Grammys, Stephen Harper was Prime Minister and the price of gas in Vancouver was 104.
The year was 2009 and the fifth seeded Falcons upset the third seeded Blues to win bronze by 10 points with the championship held at Capilano. Fast forward 16 years and the tournament again is held at Cap and the Falcons are the fifth seed.
During the regular season these schools met four times and split the seasonal series. The Blues (10-14) won the first two meetings in November at Langara by an average of 16.5 points. Then Falcons (8-16) paid a visit to Capilano at the end of January and returned the favour sweeping the Blues by an average of 13 points a game.
After losing eight straight games to open the second half of the season, the Blues have played better as of late winning three of their last four heading into the playoffs. They have averaged 71 points a game this year, shooting 39% and Mia Parkin led her club on the offensive side averaging 15 points per game. They play in a quarterfinal for the first time since 2016.
The Falcons stumble into the championship tournament, losing three in a row. They have shot 32% this season and are averaging just under 61 points a game, second fewest in the Conference. Reegan Bond is the lone Falcon to average double digits with 10.8 a game. The last Falcons postseason win came in 2019 in a quarterfinal victory.
The winner advances to the semi-final to meet the #1 VIU Mariners on Friday.
