Bearcats Advance
The CBC Bearcats move on in the playoffs
The CBC Bearcats held off a late charge by the Langara Falcons to move on to the PACWEST semifinals with a 78-72 win Thursday at the conference tournament.
Langara was done in by ineffective shooting in the first half with the Bearcats building a 43-28 advantage at halftime. CBC was hard on Falcons all-star guard Cameron Vaughn, keeping him to just five points in the first half.
CBC’s perimeter defending and the presence of broad-shouldered bigs Spencer Dododza and Favour Igbinyemi forced Langara to settle for shots from beyond the arc, but they were largely unsuccessful from three, going just 5-of-18 in the first half.
A sliver of daylight presented itself for the Falcons in the third quarter when Igbinyemi was sidelined with what looked like an ankle injury. Vaughn was able to get to work while the big man was off getting repairs, driving for a couple of buckets and hitting a three on his way to 14 for the game. Falcons forward Kadyn Brown got seven of his team-leading 15 in the third.
The Bearcats were mostly able to maintain a double-digit lead throughout the game and always seemed to have an answer to Langara buckets. Cam Carter had 14 of his game-high 20 in the second half, scoring on multiple takes to the rim. Levi Van Egdom’s three-point barrage was also key for the Bearcats as he drilled a couple of buckets from well behind the arc.
Langara made it interesting in the final frame, with Brown making some tough hoops inside and Edriel Asirit hitting two threes but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
CBC moves on to the semifinals where they will face No. 1-seed Vancouver Island University in an 8 p.m. tipoff Friday..
