Chargers Win First Ever Bronze

The Camosun Chargers endured a huge Falcons push to come away from the 2018-19 PACWEST Women’s Basketball Championship with a medal for the second year in a row, winning their first-ever bronze.

A Kathryn Candell three opened the scoring for the Chargers, and before long Camosun had a 7-0 lead. However, Jules Duong was able to swing the momentum in favour of the Falcons with an and-1 layup as Langara finished the quarter on a 10-3 run to tie the game.

Alexa Leynes hit a huge three-point shot coming out of the break to set the tone for the Falcons, who would go ahead 32-24 at the half after finishing the quarter with 22 points. The second quarter was a far cry from Langara’s play in Friday’s semifinal match, where an injured Falcons team reduced to just three players failed to score in double digits in all of the final three quarters.

In the third quarter, the Falcons were forced to relive memories of Thursday’s game, as they managed just 7 points and made just one basket while the Chargers exploded for 24 points. Eight of those 24 came from Camosun’s Player of the Game Kathryn Candell, who had 25 points in the game and went 6-18 from beyond the arc.

Langara fared better in the fourth quarter, breaking even with the Chargers, but the damage had been done as the Chargers came away with a 66-57 win and the PACWEST bronze.

Renai Fajo was named Langara’s Player of the Game, finishing with 15 points and 4 rebounds.
