Mariners Blast Chargers
The VIU Mariners are back in the PACWEST gold medal game with a win over the Camosun Chargers
By Eric Thompson
The VIU Mariners outlasted the Camosun Chargers on Friday night to claim the last spot in Saturday’s gold-medal match, where they will face the Douglas College Royals.
It was a good effort from the Chargers, but one that ultimately fell short of Thursday’s incredible comeback win that propelled them into the semifinal match. They were at their most impressive in the opening quarter, where they held the lead three times and would have been tied at the buzzer if not for a Jerod Dorby block to maintain the Mariners’ 17-15 lead.
Things completely fell apart for Camosun in the third quarter, as they just could not get a shot to fall coming out of the half. The Chargers as a team scored just 8 points in the quarter on 10% shooting, while their opponents had their best offensive quarter of the night as they put up 28. VIU Player of the Game Landon Radliff had 9 of his 21 points in the quarter as the Mariners scored on seemingly every trip while completely locking down the Chargers. At the end of the quarter, the Mariners were up by 30 points.
The Chargers fared better in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mariners 28-21, but it was too little, too late as VIU came out on top 90-67.
Landon Radliff had 21 points and 8 rebounds in a Player of the Game performance for VIU, while Dallas Hancox got the nod for the Chargers with 9 points and 8 rebounds.
