Flying Falcons
The Langara Falcons offence averaged a PACWEST high 98 points a game
For the second straight season the Langara Falcons have flown higher than any other team in the PACWEST scoring a Conference high 1766 points. They averaged 98.1 points a game and 42% shooting from the field with a well balanced attack.
Their up tempo, high flying offence starts on the backend with their guard play led the dynamic duo of Ravi Basra and Martin Bogajev. They are averaging 16 and 15 points respectively and are responsible for pushing the pace catching the other teams off “guard.”
Now in his third season Basra has grown into a dangerous weapon for the Falcons. Not only can he fill the hoop, but it’s his ability to find his teammates to give them the opportunity to score that separates himself from the other PACWEST guards. He again led the Conference averaging over eight assists a game, second most in the entire CCAA.
“Ravi is the key to our break and we have plenty of offensive weapons to finish for us,” says head coach Paul Eberhardt. “When Ravi and Martin are in sync we can put up points in a big hurry.”
A former Capilano Blue, Bogajev has fit in nicely with the Falcons this season. He started 16 games and averaged 15.8 points a game on 39% shooting. He also dangerous from long distance knocking down 44-three pointers, tied for the team lead.
“When we are at our best we will have seven or eight guys in double-digits and 25+ assists,” continued Eberhardt. “The key to our fast break is defensive rebounding and aggressive pressure defense. We love to run and force teams to play at as fast a tempo as possible. Making decisions at full speed is not easy but we work on it everyday.”
For the entire season this Falcons’ offence has been difficult to contain and they will look for more of the same this weekend at the PACWEST championship. They are desperately trying to snap a four game losing streak in the PACWEST playoffs. Their last win in the Conference post season was in 2015 when they blasted Bogajev’s Blues 92-69. Bogajev was named the Blues’ player of the game.
The Falcons finished second during the regular season and have earned a berth in Friday’s semi-final where they will await the winner of the Blues-Camosun Chargers quarterfinal.
