Quarterfinal 1: #3 Langara Falcons vs #6 Camosun Chargers
Chargers complete second half comeback to upset Falcons
In the first quarterfinal on the men’s side of the 2016 PACWEST Basketball Provincial Championships, the #3 Langara Falcons faced the #6 Camosun Chargers. After one quarter of play, the Falcons led 18-14 behind a strong first quarter by forward Gary Minhas (8 points and 4 rebounds). The Falcons continued to pull away in the second quarter and went into halftime up 41-30. Minhas led all scorers in the first half with 12 points and five rebounds. PACWEST all-rookie team member, Mathew Hampton scored 10 points for the Chargers in the half.
The Chargers were able to make the necessary adjustments at the break and outscored the Falcons 30-13 in the third to head into the final quarter with a 60-54 lead. Momentum continued to shift in favour of the Chargers in the fourth, as they dictated the pace of the game and handled the Falcons press with ease. Great ball movement and clutch shooting led way to the first upset of the tournament as the Chargers beat the Falcons, 85-77.
Player of the game, Mathew Hampton had the hot hand in the second half as he finished the game with 26 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists in the win. Leading the way for the Falcons was Grant Galbraith (18 points) and PACWEST Rookie of the Year, Ravi Basra (12 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds).
The #6 Camosun Chargers move on to the semi-finals tomorrow at 3 p.m. versus the #2 Quest Kermodes.
