MBB Quarterfinal Preview: Falcons vs. Chargers
For just the second time in PACWEST history the Falcons and Chargers will meet at the Provincial championship.
#3 Langara Falcons (13-8) vs. #6 Camosun Chargers (8-14)
Thursday March 3 - 3:00pm
For just the second time in PACWEST history the Falcons and Chargers will meet at the Provincial championship. Back in 2006 the Chargers beat the Falcons in a semi-final 67-53.
The Falcons are coming off a silver medal and have won 18 Provincial titles, while the Chargers have never won Provincial gold.
During the regular season series the Falcons outscored the Chargers 249-243, winning two of three meetings. Their tightest game was the lone match-up at Camosun as the Chargers won by 15 points.
The Falcons shot 45% against the Chargers defence led by PACWEST Rookie of the Year Ravi Basra who averaged 20 points a game. All-Star Drake Downer was also solid averaging 18 points a game. The offence however did commit 46 turnovers, something the Falcons will need to cut down in the quarterfinals.
On the other side the Chargers haven’t won a playoff game since 2012, oddly enough the last time Capilano hosted the Provincials. That season they won the bronze medal. Coming into this post season, they have lost three straight games in the quarterfinals.
In the series with the Falcons this season they compiled a better shooting percentage, hitting 56% from the field. All-Star Ted Neilson led his club averaging 13 points a game and Evan Woodson averaged 10.
Offensively the Chargers will have to tighten up as they turned the ball over 47 times against the Falcons defence, just one more than the Falcons in the series.
The Falcons-Chargers quarterfinal opens the men’s bracket at 3:00pm on Thursday afternoon. The winner will face the #2 Quest Kermodes in Friday’s semi-final.
