It’s win or go home for the Camosun Chargers on Friday at the CCAA national championship as they face the host Mount Allison Mounties in New Brunswick in a bronze medal semi-final. The winner advances to the national bronze medal game.
The Chargers earned a very tough 58-56 victory on Thursday over the ACAA champion MSVU Mystics to advance to this game. They shot 32% from the field but still struggled from the three-point line at 24%. Lucas Sheets led the offence with 13 points and Cole Belton added 12 in a very defensive match-up. Their defence forced 18 turnovers and they made 11 steals.
The Mounties will have homecourt advantage but are coming off a loss on Thursday night to the George Brown Huskies 80-76 in their gold medal semi-final. The Chargers may be able to take advantage of any lack of focus after the Mounties hope for gold was spoiled. They shot 46% and had four of their five starters reach double figures.
During the regular season the Mounties were 9-9 and lost in their Conference semifinals. They averaged 71 points a game and shot 37% from the field. The Chargers will need to make sure they put a body on forward Tim Ellison who led them offensively averaging over 15 points a contest.
The winner moves onto play for a national bronze medal on Saturday while the loser has their season conclude. Last season the VIU Mariners won bronze for the PACWEST.
