For the third consecutive season the Chargers and Falcons meet in the playoffs, but this time it’s not for bronze. The last two years they have beaten the other to win a PACWEST medal and finished third, however today it’s to win the right to play for gold and a berth in the CCAA national championship tournament.
The Chargers finished second during the regular season so earned the first-round bye straight into this semifinal. That said, they have struggled down the stretch earning just two wins in their last eight games, which included being swept by the Falcons at Langara a few weeks ago.
They seem to be healthy coming into the postseason which will obviously help in their bid to advance. In their four meetings with the Falcons this season, they won two of them, both at home at Camosun. They will need everyone to be firing on all cylinders against the multi-dimensional Falcons.
Speaking of the Falcons, it is a short turnaround for them after sneaking by the Okanagan Coyotes on Thursday night 92-90 in a thrilling quarterfinal. Veteran Royce Sargeant was once again the catalyst for scoring a game high 36 points including seven three-pointers. With the victory on Thursday night the Falcons are full of confidence after winning eight of their last nine games. Their weekend sweep of the Chargers is part of this latest run.
The winner advances to the gold medial game and punches their plane ticket to New Brunswick for the CCAA national championship in two weeks. The loser will play for PACWEST bronze.
