Regular Season Finale
With one playoff spot still up for grabs, this weekend will be exciting
Douglas Royals @ COTR Avalanche – Friday February 14, 6:00pm (MST) | WATCH HERE
It’s the final weekend of women’s volleyball with one playoff spot yet to be determined and both these schools are in the mix as the Royals (5-13) visit the COTR Avalanche (4-14).
The Royals trail the CBC Bearcats by two points for the final playoff spot and are two points ahead of the Avalanche in the standings. When they played at Douglas in November, the schools split their weekend each winning in four sets. The Royals need to take at least one match over the Avalanche and hope to have the Bearcats lose their weekend doubleheader against the Camosun Chargers to clinch the final spot as they own the tiebreaker. Coming into this weekend the Royals have lost three straight.
As for the Avalanche, they have the toughest road ahead out of the three vying for that last spot. They need to sweep the Royals and hope the Bearcats lose both of their matches as well to be considered for the postseason. They split their seasonal series with the Bearcats so other tiebreaker factors would come into play in this scenario. They have lost seven straight matches but are coming off a bye week, plus they are at home which will no doubt come into play this weekend.
Get your popcorn ready.
The Royals and Avalanche meet for the final time on Saturday at 4:00pm (MST).
Camosun Chargers @ CBC Bearcats – Friday February 14, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The Chargers (10-8) have punched their ticket to the postseason and know they will meet the Capilano Blues in a semi-final next weekend. The Bearcats (6-12) however are fighting for their playoff lives.
They are currently in the driver’s seat for the last playoff spot and will clinch it with a win either Friday or Saturday against the Chargers. They are two points up on the Douglas Royals for the last spot and have won two of their last three matches. During their weekend at Camosun in November, they dropped the first match in three sets, then came back the next day with a thrilling five-set win.
The Chargers meanwhile are coming off a bye weekend and back-to-back sweep wins over the COTR Avalanche. They have not enjoyed much success on the road this season with a 3-5 record.
On Saturday afternoon the Chargers and Bearcats will meet again at 1:00pm.
VIU Mariners @ Capilano Blues – Friday February 14, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
Both teams are headed to the playoffs and this has the potential to be a PACWEST gold medal preview as the Mariners (17-1) visit the Blues (12-6) for back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday.
The Mariners clinched the top seed and will meet the fourth seed in next week’s PACWEST championship in a semi-final, but their opponent has yet to be determined. The Blues on the other hand know they will face the Camosun Chargers in a semi-final.
In their first meeting in November, the Mariners swept the Blues at VIU in three and four sets respectively. Those victories are part of their current 15 match winning streak which they will look to extend in their final road trip of the year. The Mariners are also hosting the PACWEST championship tournament next weekend.
The Blues enter this weekend winners of 10 of their last 11 and are home for the third straight weekend. A win over the Mariners in one of their two matches would clinch the second seed, however back-to-back losses coupled with a Camosun Chargers sweep would place the two schools in a tiebreaker situation. Although that doesn’t really matter other than appearance in the standings because regardless of the outcome the Blues and Chargers will meet in next week’s semi-final.
Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm the Mariners and Blues battle in their final matches of the regular season.
