Home Sweep Home
The Blues and Bearcats each win at home on Saturday
Capilano Blues 3
Camosun Chargers 1
The Blues earned a very important weekend sweep with a four-set win on Saturday afternoon over the visiting Chargers.
In the first set, the Chargers showed they wouldn’t go down without a fight, particularly following a three-set sweep the night before. The Chargers earned a 25-22 victory in the first, but their momentum would stop right there.
The Blues bounced back in the second set and won a tight 25-23 to even the match. They carried that over and won the third set 25-22 to take control of the match, then finished off a deflated Chargers team 25-17 in the fourth to claim their 11th win of the season.
With the sweep the Blues (11-5) are four points back of the VIU Mariners (13-1) for top spot in the standings, but the Mariners have two matches in hand. They will meet each other during the final weekend of the regular season. Next weekend the Blues enjoy a bye week, and the Chargers (8-8) look for answers when they host the COTR Avalanche (4-10).
CBC Bearcats 3
Douglas Royals 2
Fo the second straight night the Royals and Bearcats went the distance in a thrilling five-set match that the hometown Bearcats would eventually win, splitting the weekend.
After winning in five on Friday, the Royals came out swinging and took the first set 25-17. The Bearcats would even the match in the next set winning 27-25 showing a sign of things to come.
The Royals again took the advantage in the match winning the third set 25-22, trying to record a weekend sweep but the Bearcats had other ideas. They would roar back in the fourth set winning 25-18 forcing a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth, the Royals led 12-7 and looked to be on their way to winning, but the Bearcats found another level and completed the comeback scoring the next eight points and won an incredible 15-12. It was their fifth win of the season, and more importantly they moved themselves into a fourth-place tie with the Royals for the final playoff spot.
Next weekend the Bearcats (5-11) and Royals (5-11) will enjoy a bye week.
