Women's Volleyball Week 9 Recap
Another exciting weekend of PACWEST women's volleyball
VIU Dominates Weekend
The Mariners (13-1) made quick work of the hometown Bearcats and Friday and Saturday and earned a clean sweep on the weekend.
On Friday they scored set wins of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-18 not allowing the Bearcats to find a rhythm offensively. Then on Saturday, the sets were a bit more competitive but the Mariners still prevailed winning 27-25, 25-16 and 27-.25.
They have now won 11 straight matches and have already clinched a playoff spot and will host the COTR Avalanche (4-10) beginning on Thursday night. Meanwhile the Bearcats (4-10) have lost two in a row and will host the Douglas Royals (4-10) next weekend.
Road Warriors
The Capilano Blues made the long bus trip to visit the COTR Avalanche and left with a pair of hard-fought wins.
On Friday they lost the first set 25-22, before finding their grove and winning the next three 25-22, 25-14 and finished off the match 25-22.
Their rematch on Saturday was arguably the most exciting of the entire PACWEST weekend. The Blues continued their winning ways in the first set taking down the Avs 25-20, before the home side bounced back to tie the match with a 25-23 victory. In the third, the points went back and forth but the Blues were able to find an extra gear at the end to win 25-22, but again the Avalanche came right back. They needed extra points in the fourth set, but the Avs tied the match with a 26-24 victory forcing a decisive set.
In the fifth the teams were exhausted but somehow found a way to battle hard. They again traded points back-and-forth until the Blues (9-5) stopped the Avalanche 18-16 for their seventh straight win. They now head home and will play out the final six matches of the regular season on their own floor. Next weekend they welcome the Camosun Chargers (8-6) in a possible semi-final preview.
With the weekend setback the Avalanche have lost three straight and will enjoy a bye next weekend before heading out to the Island to meet the VIU Mariners (13-1) and the Chargers and play four matches in four days.
A Weekend Split
The Camosun Chargers hosted the Douglas Royals on the weekend with each school earning important points in the standings.
On Friday night the Royals played a gritty road match and scored a hard fought four-set victory. They won the first set 25-22 before the Chargers came right back to win 25-18 to tie the match. The Royals snatched that momentum away again with an impressive 25-16 win in the third set before riding that wave into the fourth beating the Chargers 25-23 to win the match.
In the rematch on Saturday, it was the Chargers that took control winning the first set 25-18 trying to set the tone against the Royals. However, the Royals had an immediate answer tying the match with a 25-20 second set victory. That momentum didn’t last long as the Chargers came right back winning the third set 25-23 and then captured the fourth set and match 25-20 to earn the weekend split.
With the split the Chargers (8-6) win their eighth of the campaign and they will welcome the COTR Avalanche (4-10) on Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend while the Royals (4-10) will be at CBC for a massive weekend with the Bearcats (4-10) as both schools push for a playoff spot.
