Welcome Back Volleyball
The second half of the season opens this weekend
The holiday break is finally over and PACWEST women’s volleyball hits the court this weekend with three matches to kick off the second half of the season.
CBC Bearcats @ COTR Avalanche – Friday January 10, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
A pair of schools with only three wins meet this weekend with potential tiebreaker points on the line. It’s the second time the Avalanche and Bearcats meet after the schools split their first weekend doubleheader in October. Those matches were held at CBC and the Avalanche took the first meeting 3-2, coming back to win three straight sets after dropping the first two. The next day the Bearcats bounced back and won in four sets.
Just before the break the Avalanche lost three straight and are hoping a little home cooking can get them on the right path. They will play four in a row on their home floor to open the second half.
The Bearcats also lost three in a row heading into the break and could only muster one set win in that span. They haven’t had much luck on the road this season, winning once in six matches.
These two schools will meet again on Saturday afternoon.
Camosun Chargers @ VIU Mariners – Friday January 10, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The top two teams in the Conference meet again this weekend but this time in Nanaimo. They split their weekend in late October with each school beating the other in four sets.
The Mariners loss at Camosun in October is the only set back they have had so far this season. Since then, they have won seven straight and are 6-0 on their home floor. They haven’t had much time off this holiday break as the team traveled to Florida and played 14 matches in five days to prepare for the second half push.
Meanwhile the Chargers won three of four heading into the holidays and will be in tough playing at VIU this weekend. They won’t have much time getting back into the swing of things and will need to come out strong on Friday night. They have been a very good 3-1 on the road this season.
These two will meet again on Saturday afternoon for the final time this regular season.
Capilano Blues @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 10, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
Four points separate them in the standings with the Blues holding sole possession of third place heading into the second half this weekend.
The Blues will play four straight matches on the road to open the second half, then play six in a row at home to finish the season where they are currently 4-0. All this with a new head coach as Sue Soolsma takes over in the second half following the departure of John Swanson. Coach Soolsma will look to turn their road fortunes after going 1-5 in the first half.
It’s been a tough road so far for the Royals with only three wins and losers of four in a row heading into Christmas. They meet a Blues team that swept them earlier this season at Capilano. They need a win this weekend to stay in the thick of the playoff race.
They meet again on Saturday at 5:00pm.
