Women's Week 12 Volleyball Recap
And just like that the regular season ends
FRIDAY
Mariners Sweep Bearcats
Friday night the Mariners honoured their graduating players and promptly made quick work of the visiting Bearcats, sweeping them in three sets 25-18, 25-11 and 25-21.
Offensively Aimee Skinner was dynamite collecting a match high 17 kills and 12 digs. Senior Jacey Neid chipped with eight kills and nine digs following a nice ceremony prior to the match. Fellow graduating player, setter Linnea Brickwood added 13 digs in the sweep.
With the loss the Bearcats have been eliminated from playoff contention and will play for pride in their season finale on Saturday afternoon when these teams meet again.
After this Bearcats loss, it allows the Camosun Chargers to clinch the final playoff spot and will be the opponent for the Mariners in next week’s semi-final.
Blues Clinch Third Place
With a four-set victory at the COTR Avalanche on Friday night, the Capilano Blues punched their ticket to the PACWEST championship tournament and will finish in third place setting up a semi-final match up with the host Douglas Royals next weekend.
The Blues beat the Avs 25-19, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-19. It was their ninth win of the campaign and will look to earn a weekend sweep on Saturday afternoon before making the trip back to North Vancouver.
For the Avalanche they fall for the 15th time this season. Ella Nichols led them offensively with 13 kills and had an ace in the setback.
These two will meet in the season finale on Saturday afternoon.
Royals Roaring
The hosts of the PACWEST championship tournament next week, the Douglas Royals are fine tuning their game and beat the visiting Camosun Chargers on Friday night in four sets; 25-19, 23-25, 25-17 and 28-26.
They have already clinched second place and know they will meet the Capilano Blues in Friday’s semi-final.
The Chargers continue to struggle falling for the fourth time in their last five matches in the month of February. Each match they have played this month has ended in the fourth set. Despite the loss, the Chargers still clinched the final playoff spot because of the loss to the CBC Bearcats. The Chargers will meet the VIU Mariners in a semi-final to open the postseason.
Saturday afternoon the Royals and Chargers meet for the final time in the regular season.
SATURDAY
Mariners Dominate Bearcats
For the second straight day the VIU Mariners took down the visiting CBC Bearcats in three-straight sets winning 25-20, 25-11 and 25-12 to put a bow on the regular season. They used several players in the victory and were led by Grace Brisebois and her eight kills, Aimee Skinner added six and Megan Duffy pounded down five.
Two graduating players were in the mix as well, Linnea Brickwood collected six service aces and Mika Yamada had a match high 14 digs.
The Mariners now prepare for a semi-final match-up with the Camosun Chargers on Friday with the winner playing for PACWEST gold AND will punch their ticket to the CCAA national championship.
The Bearcats missed the postseason by just two points. They made tremendous strides this season and will look forward to next year.
Royals Blank Chargers
The second place Royals earned a weekend sweep with a three-set victory on Saturday beating the Chargers 25-19, 25-23 and 25-22.
They will now host the PACWEST championship beginning on Friday and will meet the #3 seeded Capilano Blues in a semi-final. The winner will play for PACWEST gold and earn a spot at the CCAA national championship.
The Chargers drop their second straight heading into the playoffs and are the #4 seed. They will meet the #1 VIU Mariners on Friday afternoon in a semi-final.
Avalanche Surprise Blues
After dropping the first set 21-25, the Avalanche played great and upset the visiting Capilano Blues to end their season on a high note. They won the next three sets 25-19, 25-22 and 25-17 for the victory. Overall, they won five matches this season and have lots to build upon heading into next year.
Despite the loss the Blues are the third seed heading into this week’s PACWEST championship tournament. They will meet the host Douglas Royals on Friday night in front of what should be a ruckus crowd. The winner advances to play for gold, a match the Blues have not played in since 2014.
