Chargers Win National Silver
The PACWEST champions win their second ever nation silver
The Camosun Chargers magical run ended on Saturday night as they claimed a CCAA silver medal falling in the gold medal match to the Lakeland Rustlers. Oddly enough it was the exact same outcome in 2017 when the Chargers hosted the championship tournament.
To get to the gold medal match the Chargers first had to win their quarterfinal on Thursday, and they did that with ease, sweeping the ACAA champion Holland Hurricanes. They dominated with scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-15 to advance to the semi-finals.
The next day in that semi-final the Chargers met the ACAC wildcard Augustana Vikings from Camrose Alberta. The teams split the first two sets, the Chargers winning 25-20 before the Vikings capturing the second set 25-14. The Chargers turned the tide in the third winning the next two sets 25-21 and 25-19 to punch their ticket to the gold medal match.
They would meet the Rustlers in the national title match who also claimed a sweep and four-set victory en route to the finale. The ACAC champions proved too much to handle and the Chargers fell in three-straight sets and would settle for silver losing 22-25, 14-25, 18-25.
Following the match, the tournament All-Stars were announced. Hannah May was named a Second Team All-Star while libero Corriena McNeice and Erica Bolink were named First Team All-Stars.
Elsewhere the host and four-time defending national champion VIU Mariners found themselves in the bronze medal match but fell to the Humber Hawks in four-sets.
