Women's Volleyball Summary
The first half of the season came to close this weekend
FRIDAY
VIU Mariners 3 – 25-15, 23-25, 25-13, 25-15
Camosun Chargers 1
The Island Rivalry was alive and well on Friday night as the visiting Mariners took down the Chargers in front of a ruckus crowd. Karoline Tormena led the offence with 11 kills, but was also solid on the defensive side with 13 digs. Taylor Wickman chipped in with 10 kills and as usual Chantel Cumming was excellent running the offence with 37 assists.
The Chargers offence was led by Sydney Svicenec and her match high 18 kills, while Mika Yamada collected 12 and 11 digs.
Douglas 3 – 25-21, 25-22, 25-7
Capilano Blues 0
The defending PACWEST champs made quick work of the Blues on Friday night in a three set sweep. Caet McCorkell was terrific with 13 kills and Vania Oliveira had 11. The potent attack was orchestrated by setter Jane Kepler and her 29 assists.
The Blues offence was quiet led by Jaylene Lucas and Zoe Mydansky who each had six kills.
UFV Cascades 3 – 25-18, 25-22, 25-7
CBC Bearcats 0
The battle of Abbotsford was rather lopsided on Friday night as the Cascades swept away the Bearcats with a very balanced offence. Both Kim Bauder and Amanda Matsui led the way with nine kills each and Kara Williams collected 26 assists.
The Bearcat offence didn’t generate much, recording a total of 15 kills over the three sets. Megan Polant had six of those kills and Julia Weiss came up with 10 digs.
SATURDAY
VIU Mariners 3 – 25-19, 25-15, 25-13
Camosun Chargers 0
The Mariners finished the first half of the season with a perfect 12-0 record and swept the weekend matches at Camosun.
Setter Chantel Cumming ran a very balanced offence that included 25 assists. Karoline Tormena was her primary target with eight kills and Tova Rae chipped in with seven.
The Chargers offence was contained for most of the match. Lauren Montgomery-Stinson had a team high seven kills.
UFV Cascades 3 – 25-20, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22
CBC Bearcats 1
SUNDAY
Douglas Royals 3 – 25-23, 25-16, 25-15
Capilano Blues 0
For the second straight match this weekend the Royals swept the Blues in the home and home to end the first half of the season.
Emma Schill was the lone Royal in double-digit kills as she tallied 10. Meanwhile on the defensive side Vicki Schley was outstanding with 17 digs.
Speaking of defence Isabela Lima of the Blues was a pillar of strength with 25 digs. Offensively both Sarah Curleigh and Meghan Koven each tallied nine.
