Week 5 Pitch Recap
Women's soccer had plenty of ups and downs this weekend
Week 5 is in the books for women’s PACWEST soccer, here’s a recap…
SATURDAY
Douglas Royals 1
Capilano Blues 1
After a scoreless first half, the Royals struck first in the second on a highlight reel goal.
Katie Buckle stole a pass at the midfield stripe and carried right into the box, getting past three defenders before chipping past the keeper into the back of the net.
The Blues tied the game on a pretty looking goal 12 minutes later. Mya Smith took a long pass off a bounce and her head, got the ball to Sophie Pather in the box, who blasted a shot past the keeper for her second of the season.
VIU Mariners 1
Langara Falcons 1
With the draw the Mariners kept their unbeaten streak alive and had to battle hard in this one.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a strong offensive push keeping the ball deep in the Mariners’ end. It would eventually pop free to Manu Vasquz who made no mistake and knocked it into the bottom left corner past the outstretched arm of Kaiden Thorpe.
It wasn’t until the 69th minute that the Mariners would tie it. A strong rush on the left side resulted in two shots in tight that keeper Simran Basra initially stopped. However, a rebound on the second stop bounced over to a wide-open Tori Hauptman who finished it off for her third of the season.
SUNDAY
Douglas Royals 3
VIU Mariners 2
An exciting contest on Sunday as the Royals handed the Mariners their first loss this season.
Emma Saran would not be denied the first goal of the game. After her initial shot was blocked in the box, she stayed with it and looped a ball over the head of the keeper Kaiden Thorpe and into the back of the net.
In extra time of the first half, Hannah Rose of the Mariners was awarded a direct kick and made sure her club would head into the break tied with a beautiful shot over the keeper for her first of the season.
The Royals would retake the lead in the 55th minute when Isabelle Dobbin controlled a beautiful pass, getting behind the backline and knocking it home for her Conference leading fifth of the season. They then took a two-goal lead following some terrific ballhandling by Ashlynn Grim who eventually unleased a gorgeous shot just beyond the box and over the head of the keeper for her season of the year.
In the 82nd minute the Mariners answered back after a juicy rebound came to Amber Hawthorne she kicked into the open net cutting the lead to one, but it’s as close as they would come.
Capilano Blues 0
Langara Falcons 0
For the first time this season there was no scoring in a PACWEST soccer game. Both the Blues and Falcons had opportunities, but the keepers stood tall.
Amaya Salvino made four saves for the Blues while Simran Basra made three for the Falcons including one in the dying seconds to keep the game scoreless.
