Women's Soccer Week 3 Recap
Another exciting weekend with back and forth action
Saturday afternoon saw some terrific play from the backline not allowing the opposing offences many opportunities.
SATURDAY SEPETMBER 21
Capilano Blues 1
VIU Mariners 1
The Blues hosted the Mariners for the second time in six days on Saturday to open Week 3 of the season. They are both very balanced teams, and it showed once again in this game as they limited their opponents’ offensive chances.
After a scoreless first half, the Blues opened the scoring with Sasha Fans connecting on a beautiful crossing shot that found the back corner of the net for her second of the season in the 66th minute.
The game stayed that way before the Mariners found the equalizer in the 78th minute when Jade Dillabough chipped a ball just past the back line and turned on the jets to get free. Her right footed shot found space under the Blues keeper and rolled into the net to tie it for her second of the year.
Despite those goals the keepers were solid. Amaya Salvino made eight saves for the Blues and Kaiden Thrope kept her Mariners in the game with three saves.
Langara Falcons 1
Douglas Royals 0
The Falcons recorded their first win of the season with an upset win at Douglas.
After a scoreless first half, Christie Wong received an outstanding pass, out sprinted the backline and squeaked a shot under the Royals keeper to get the Falcons on the board in the 50th minute. That goal would turn out to be the game winner and is Wong’s second of the campaign.
Keeper Simran Basra made seven saves in earning the clean sheet. The Royals keeper Vanessa Chung was busy and kept her club in the game with six saves.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22
VIU Mariners 2
Langara Falcons 0
The visiting Mariners played a gritty road game on Sunday defeating the Langara Falcons 2-0.
In the 11th minute the Mariners opened the scoring when Mya Creed lofted a cross into the box that somehow avoided everyone including the Falcons keeper and bounced into the back of the net. The bizarre looking goal would stand up as the game winner.
Then in the 54th minute the visitors added some insurance after an initial shot rang off the post Tori Hauptman was able to back heel it into the net for her first of the season.
Keeper Brooke Ingram wasn’t very busy and earned the shutout without making a save. She will no doubt credit her backline.
Douglas Royals 2
Capilano Blues 0
The Royals got back in the win column on Sunday after not scoring the day before, they tallied a pair on Sunday afternoon at Capilano. They got the first goal out of the way early in the second minute when Tara Krsmanovic made a terrific midfield steal, carried the ball all the way into the crease, with a little chip past the keeper, then finished it off with a blast from in tight. That goal would turn out to be the game winner.
In the 54th minute Isabelle Dobbin continued her hot play with an outstanding left foot shot over the top of the keeper as she was streaking down the left wing with a defender on her. It was her fourth goal of the campaign.
At the other end Vanessa Chung earned the shutout with two saves.
