The Douglas Royals took down the SAIT Trojans on Thursday in the CCAA women’s national quarterfinal 2-1 to advance to the bronze medal semi-final.
In snowy, blustery conditions in PEI the Royals and Trojans went back and forth in the first half but neither team could score. Then in the second half it would be the Trojans that opened the scoring getting a ball past keeper Vanessa Chung.
That lead however didn’t last long when Ashlyn Grim scored the equalizer in the 66th minute. Then Christine Singh scored what would be the game winner shortly after that in the 72nd minute as the Royals continued to buzz in the Trojans zone.
With the victory the Royals now meet the RSEQ champion Champlain Saint Lambert Cavaliers in the bronze semi-final. After opening the tournament with a convincing 6-0 win over the Manitoba champion Brandon Bobcats, the Cavaliers lost their scoring touch falling 2-0 to the Seneca Sting in the semi-final and move to the bronze medal bracket. The Sting meanwhile will play for gold.
During the regular season they finished 7-2-1 and captured the RSEQ title with a 2-1 win over Sainte-Foy. The Royals must watch out for Victoria Dupont who collected the hattrick in their 6-0 win over the Bobcats.
The winner will advance to the bronze medal game on Saturday, while the loser will play a consolation game.
