Blues Dominate at Nationals
The Capilano Blues open with a 7-1 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons in the quarterfinal
The Capilano Blues women’s team certainly didn’t look like a team that hasn’t appeared in the CCAA women’s national soccer championship tournament in 13 seasons.
On Wednesday they opened the tournament completely dominating the Ontario champion Fanshawe Falcons 7-1, scoring all seven goals in the first half. They not only won on the scoreboard, but they dictated the pace of play and controlled the ball for the majority of the game.
Mya Fraser opened the floodgates using her head to beat the keeper on the left side in the eighth minute. Catrina Olstrom followed that goal with some eye popping moves at the top of the box just three minutes later and took a shot that beat the keeper high. This goal would turn out to be the game winner.
In the 27th minute the PACWEST Rookie of the Year Kayla Campbell notched her first of the postseason on a pass from Claire Ye. Just a minute later Taylor Colby added to the onslaught off a feed from Olstrom.
Due to an earlier injury to the Falcons’ keeper the referee added on 10 minutes for injury time and the Blues took advantage. First it was Campbell tallying her second of the half on another feed from Olstrom off the right side to make it a five-goal lead. Olstrom and Colby then both added their second of the contest giving the Blues an incredible 7-0 lead at the half.
The three-time Ontario champion Falcons were shell-shocked headed into the break and found themselves in a position they don’t often face. The Falcons breezed through the regular season and won Ontario gold thanks in large part to their potent offence which included the nation’s top goal scorer Kayla McQueen who had scored 17 goals. On Wednesday however they were silent and found it difficult to crack the Blues defence.
Finally in the 59th minute McQueen scored to break Sabrina Lam’s shutout bid, but it was far too late. With the win the Blues cruised into the semi-final.
Next up they will face the Vanier Cheetahs from the RESQ and a team that blasted the Holland Hurricanes 7-0 in the quarters. The semi-final is slated for Thursday at 12:00pm PST.
