Blues & Royals Win in Finale
Sunday marked the regular season finale for all four PACWEST teams
Capilano Blues 2
VIU Mariners 0
The Blues turned in a wonderful 2-0 performance on Sunday afternoon clinching a first place bye into the PACWEST gold medal game next weekend.
Mya Fraser opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, her third against the Mariners this season. Incredibly it would turn out to be the game winner. In the 50th minute Taylor Colby added some insurance, also her third against the Mariners this season.
Defensively the Blues didn’t give up much as Alex Gazzola made two saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. She shared time in goal with Sabrina Lam who played the entire first half.
With their seven wins the Blues finish first capturing the tie-breaker over the Douglas Royals and receive a bye into the PACWEST gold medal game this coming weekend. The Mariners haven’t really found their stride this season with only two wins will face the Royals in a PACWEST semi-final on Saturday.
Douglas Royals 2
Langara Falcons 0
Despite their shutout on Sunday and their identical record as the first place Blues, the Royals will finish second in the standings and compete in the PACWEST semi-final on Saturday afternoon. The Blues had a better goals for/against ratio giving them the tie-breaker.
On Sunday the Royals got a goal from Kya Cleto in the 10th minute to jump in front of the Falcons in the regular season finale. The goal would hold up as the game winner. The y did add another when Jessica Lau scored in the second half extra time, her first of the season.
Elisha Machado made three saves for her third shutout of the year.
Falcons’ keeper Alyssa Narayan was busy but kept her team in the game with seven saves, six of them in the second half.
The Royals will now face the Mariners in the PACWEST semi-final on Saturday while the Falcons season comes to a close.
