Royals & Mariners Win
In a pair of important games in the standings; the Royals and Mariners each claimed a victory
Douglas Royals 5
Capilano Blues 3
The Douglas Royals take over sole possession of first place after a convincing 5-3 win over the previously undefeated Capilano Blues on Sunday afternoon.
The Royals opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Jessica Parks tallied her second goal against the Blues this season. From there both teams had their chances but it wasn’t until the 41st minute when Alicia Skirzyk beat the keeper to put the Royals in front by a pair. Like Parks it was Skirzyk’s second goal against the Blues this season as well.
The two goal advantage didn’t last long as just a minute later Claire Ye of the Blues cut the lead in half with her fourth of the season. The teams went into the locker room for halftime with the Royals in front 2-1.
In the 55th minute the Royals would restore their two goal advantage when Preet Thandi scored her first of the season. Then eight minutes later the Royals would strike again as Martina Pettenon scored.
The Blues would finally rally in the 67th minute when Kayla Campbell scored her fourth of the campaign to tie her teammate Claire Ye at the top of the PACWEST scoring leaderboard. More importantly it again cut the Royals lead in half at 4-2.
In the 81st minute Pettenon tallied her second of the game putting an end to any hope of a Blues comeback. That said the Blues did score one more goal in extra time when Lauren Gray recorded her first of the season but it was too little, too late as the Royals claimed the victory and are now three points up on the Blues for first place in the standings.
VIU Mariners 4
Langara Falcons 1
The Mariners got a monster game from Captain Cara Dunlop and record their first win since Week 1 and move six points up on the Falcons for the final playoff spot.
Dunlop opened the scoring in the ninth minute, and then followed with her second of the contest in the 23rd minute, scoring what would turn out to be the game winner.
Then just before halftime Karen Battie scored her first of the season in the 33rd minute giving the home side a comfortable lead heading into the break.
In the second half the Mariners were on cruise control allowing just five shots from the Falcons offensive attack. The Mariners padded their lead in the 73rd minute when Shea Battie scored to make it 4-0.
The Falcons finally avoided a shutout in the 84th minute when Cassidy Kwan scored her second of the season but it was far too late as keeper Melanie Osborne made four saves in the victory.
