PACWEST Women's Soccer Recap
The PACWEST soccer season opened over the weekend to some very exciting games.
SATURDAY
Douglas Royals 2
Langara Falcons 0
The defending PACWEST champion Royals opened the season with a shutout win at home over the Falcons on Saturday.
Alexa Gazzola recorded the shutout and watched her teammates foil and Falcons attack.
Offensively the Royals saw goals from veteran Mikayla Hamilton along with Emma Thomas.
Capilano Blues 1
VIU Mariners 1
A great back and forth game to open the PACWEST season for both teams.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 24th minute when the Mariners’ Justine McMahon opened the scoring getting a ball past Blues’ netminder Brittney Roussy.
Just after halftime the Blues would tie the score when Arin McIldoon found the back of the net in the 50th minute.
Both Roussy and Mariners’ goalie Melanie Osborne had to be sharp. Roussy made 10 saves while Osborne push aside three.
SUNDAY
Douglas Royals 3
Capilano Blues 3
A high scoring game with a pair of potent offences on Sunday as the Royals and Blues played to a 3-3 tie.
The Royals saw both Emma Thomas and Mikayla Hamilton score their second in as many days. Last season’s PACWEST leading scorer Sam Kell scored her first.
The Blues on the other hand played in their second straight tie. Catrina Olstrom scored a pair of goals while Brooklynn Doucette got her first of the campaign.
VIU Mariners 0
Langara Falcons 0
In a rematch of last season’s bronze medal game the Mariners and Falcons played to a scoreless tie. Both Melanie Osborne and Sierra Grieco turned away each shot they faced.
Osborne made two saves, both in the first half, while Grieco turned aside seven shots.
