The CBC Bearcats have made history and won their first ever CCAA national championship with a seven-point win over the St. Mary’s Lightning (Calgary) on Saturday.
It was a complete team victory by the Bearcats using timely shooting and outstanding defence bringing the gold medal to Abbotsford for the first time in school history.
Offensively they shot 44% in the gold medal game led by the tournament MVP Elissa Vreugdenhil who dropped 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Grace Park had her best game of the year with 20 points and was named the Player of the Game. The ‘Cats had balanced scoring as well with Madeline Beerwald scoring 20 points and Kargari Tomita added seven, quarterbacking their offence to near perfection.
On the defensive end they held the CCAA Player of the Year Maitlynn Miller to 11 points and didn’t offer anything easy to the Lightning shooters.
Following the gold medal presentation the All-Stars and MVP were announced:
The tournament MVP was awarded to Elissa Vreugdenhil who averaged a double-double in the tournament and was a force on both ends of the floor, despite a semi-final injury.
