Mariners Season Closes
The VIU Mariners season ended on Friday night in a national bronze semi-final
SAIT Trojans 82
VIU Mariners 71
The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners had their season end abruptly on Friday night falling 82-71 to the ACAC champion SAIT Trojans in the CCAA bronze medal semi-final.
It was a physical game on both sides of the ball with the Mariners taking a two-point lead into the fourth quarter. However, the Trojans offence came alive in the final frame outscoring the Mariners 30-17 to claim the victory and move onto the bronze medal game.
Despite the loss, the Mariners had their best shooting game of the tournament at 32% but struggled from the three-point line connecting on just five of 27 attempts. Harriette Mackenzie again led the way with a solid 24 points and 15 rebounds and was named Player of the Game for the third straight time, while Makayla Kimble, playing in her final game added 11 points.
The loss ends the Mariners season, and they will come home without a medal.
They had a tremendous regular season at 21-1 capturing the PACWEST gold medal, their fourth in six years. Their younger players gained valuable experience, and they will no doubt be a force again next year. Congratulations on another amazing season representing the PACWESET on the national stage.
