Bearcats Play For Gold
The CBC Bearcats knocked off the Alberta champions to advance to the national title game
CBC Bearcats 63
SAIT Trojans 55
The CBC Bearcats are playing for a national championship after an impressive eight-point victory over the ACAC champion SAIT Trojans on Thursday night in a semifinal.
The first quarter was the difference as the Bearcats outscored the Trojans 20-11, setting the pace for the rest of the game. They rode that offensive output to their semifinal win and in doing so shot 38% from the field. Player of the Game Elissa Vreugdenhil was outstanding with 18 points and 14 rebounds, Madeline Beerwald added 13 and 11 while Kagari Tomita finished with eight points and 11 boards.
Defensively the Bearcats didn’t allow the dangerous Trojans shooters many easy looks. They held them to 26% shooting and 18% from the three-point line.
This was the biggest win in school history, and they are now one win away from capturing the national crown in their first appearance at the CCAA national championship. They will meet the wildcard team from Alberta, the St. Mary’s Lightning from Calgary, who lost to the Trojans in the ACAC gold medal game two weeks ago. Oddly both teams are wildcard berths, and both lost the Conference title game. Tip off on Saturday is 3:00pm PST
