Mariners Needing Bounce Back Game
The VIU Mariners will play the MSVU Mystics in a bronze quarterfinal at the national championship
VIU Mariners vs. MSVU Mystics – Thursday March 13, 9:00am PST | BRONZE QUARTERFINAL
The Mariners hope of a national title was stopped on Wednesday in their quarterfinal loss to the OCAA champion Mohawk Mountaineers 62-57.
Offensively the Mariners started sluggish getting outscored 19-13 in the first quarter and struggled all game, never really finding a good rhythm being held to 23% shooting overall. All-Canadian Harriette Mackenzie turned in a solid individual effort scoring 20 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, the only player in double figures and was named the Player of the Game. Makayla Kimble was the next highest Mariner scorer with just eight points on 2-10 shooting from the field.
The Mountaineers had a strong performance from their best player Angong Jacob who dropped a game high 26 points. They shot 37% against the Mariners defence.
With the setback, the Mariners move over to the bronze medal side of the bracket and will meet the ACAA champion Mystics on Thursday morning. They were zapped by the St. Mary’s Lightning in their quarterfinal loss 82-67. They shot 33% and were led by Amanda Pearcey and her game high 28 points and Celine Sterckel added 22. Incredibly these two athletes combined for 50 of their 67 points
During the regular season, the Mystics finished 15-3, averaging over 73-points a game and shot 35%. Their offence is led by Pearcey and her 15.9 points a game.
It’s a must win for the Mariners to stay alive in the chase for a national medal. The winner advances to a bronze medal semi-final on Friday.
