Women's Week 13 Rewind
A look back at Week 13 of the women's basketball schedule
FRIDAY
Capilano Blues 90
Okanagan Coyotes 59
The Blues exploded out of the gate outscoring the Coyotes 27-7 in the first quarter and cruised to victory snapping their eight-game losing streak.
Their offence was outstanding shooting 51% from the field with five players reaching double figures led by Barcha Hnizdilova and her team high 20 points.
The Coyotes dressed only six on Friday night and didn’t have much of a push back in that first quarter or the first half. They trailed 48-16 at halftime but did play better in the second half. Faith Hunter led them offensively dropping a game high 26 points playing all 40 minutes.
The Blues (8-13) and Coyotes (3-18) meet again on Saturday in Kelowna.
Langara Falcons 74
Camosun Chargers 58
The Falcons scored 30 points in the first quarter and led 48-18 at the half en route to their eighth win of the campaign.
They shot 35% in the lopsided win and Nyssa Sunner knocked down five-three points and led all scorers with 23 points while Amy Rokosh added 12.
Turnovers was a major issue for the Chargers on Friday night as they coughed up the ball 25 times. When they hung on to it, they shot 35% and Didi Niang had a double double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Saturday afternoon the Falcons (8-13) will meet the Chargers (2-19) for the final time this year.
SATURDAY
CBC Bearcats 67
Douglas Royals 60
The Bearcats continued their hot play on Saturday earning the weekend sweep over the Royals and in the process pulled into a first-place tie with the idle VIU Mariners. However, the Mariners have two games in hand.
Saturday’s victory was their final game before the PACWEST playoffs. They have a bye before the postseason begins and have locked down the second seed at the very least which comes with a bye into the semi-final at the PACWEST championship tournament. The Bearcats will no doubt enjoy the time off to heal the bumps and bruises before their semi-final tilt.
They outscored the Royals 19-12 in the final frame to pull away and shot 43% in Saturday’s victory, getting contributions from several players. Julie Dueck led the way with 16 points and Kagari Tomita chipped in with 15 points.
The Royals offence uncharacteristically committed 22 turnovers but did shoot 34% from the field. Only Mackenzie Dalphond reached double figures finishing with 17 points.
As mentioned, the Bearcats (19-3) will enjoy a bye week before the playoffs and the Royals (15-7) will welcome the Okanagan Coyotes (3-19) next weekend for the regular season finale and a potential playoff preview. The Royals have clinched the third seed and will face the sixth seed in a quarterfinal at the PACWEST championship tournament. The Coyotes currently hold that sixth spot.
Capilano Blues 97
Okanagan Coyotes 46
The Blues earned a second straight lopsided win in Kelowna on Saturday, blasting the Coyotes in the third quarter outscoring them 33-8 en route to their ninth win of the year.
On the offensive side they shot 55% from the field and connected on 12-three pointers. Barcha Hnizdilova was terrific scoring a game high 21 points and Mia Parkin dropped 19.
The shorthanded Coyotes dressed only six players again on Saturday and shot 34%. Faith Hunter scored a team-high 17 points.
Next weekend the Blues (9-13) host the Camosun Chargers (3-19) while the Coyotes (3-19) visit the Douglas Royals (15-7).
Camosun Chargers 65
Langara Falcons 59
The Chargers finally tasted victory for the first time since November 1st as they beat the Falcons on Saturday afternoon. Oddly enough, their last victory on November 1st was also against the Falcons.
On the offensive side the Chargers outscored their opponents 17-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Overall, they shot 35% with Kanda Diop scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
The Falcons struggled offensively shooting 30% with Reegan Bond their primary focal point in scoring as she dropped a game high 24 points.
Next weekend the playoff bound Falcons (8-14) host the VIU Mariners (19-1) and the Chargers (3-19) visit the Capilano Blues (9-13). The Chargers need to sweep the Blues and have the Okanagan Coyotes lose both next weekend to qualify for the playoffs.
