Week 11 Women's Basketball Rewind
The Mariners, Bearcats and Falcons each record a Saturday win
VIU Mariners 59
Douglas Royals 36
It was one of, if not the lowest scoring game this season as the first place Mariners collect a weekend sweep as neither offence got into a grove.
The Mariners outscored the Royals 11-2 in the first quarter and never looked back. As a team they shot 33% and Harriette Mackenzie recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds while Thista Thorn was good off the bench, dropping in 15 points.
The Royals were frustrated offensively shooting 21% from the field. Mackenzie Dalphond was the only Royal to reach the double figure plateau, scoring 13 points.
Next weekend the Mariners (17-1) host the Capilano Blues (7-11) and the Royals (13-5) visit the Camosun Chargers (2-16).
CBC Bearcats 73
Camosun Chargers 60
The Bearcats kept pace in the standings with a big win over the visiting Chargers on Saturday afternoon and earned a weekend sweep.
Second half adjustments for the Bearcats worked to perfection outscoring the Chargers 20-2 in the third quarter. They shot 33% during the ballgame overall and Elissa Vreugdenhil helped secure their 13th straight victory.
The third quarter hole was too big for the Chargers to climb out of shooting 30% from the field. Sevene Grewal did have a game high of 16 points behind four-three pointers and Didi Niang added 15 in the loss.
Next weekend the Bearcats (15-3) visit the Okanagan Coyotes (3-15) and the Chargers (2-16) welcome the Douglas Royals (13-5).
Langara Falcons 80
Capilano Blues 60
For the second straight night the visiting Falcons pull off an impressive upset, beating the Blues by 20 points.
The Falcons poured on the offence in the second half outscoring the hometown Blues 43-24. Their offence shot 41% from the field with plenty of production up and down the roster, led by Katelyn Lafleur and her 16 points. The win moves the Falcons into a fourth-place tie with the Blue, but the Blues have two games in hand.
The second half was not kind to the Blues who shot 34% overall but couldn’t keep pace with the Falcons. Madeleine Coffin was outstanding in the loss recording a game high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Next week the Falcons (7-13) enjoy a bye week and the Blues (7-11) have a tall task visiting the VIU Mariners (17-1) for a doubleheader.
