Women's Hoops - Week 11
A full slate of games this weekend in women's basketball
VIU Mariners @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 31, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The marquee match-up this weekend in women’s basketball will see the first place Mariners visit the second place Royals with just four points separating them in the standings.
They met back in early November and split their weekend doubleheader in Nanaimo. The victory by the Royals was the only loss the Mariners have suffered this season. In the split, the Mariners won the first game by 14 points before the Royals evened the seasonal series with and eight-point victory.
The Mariners shot the ball well against the Royals averaging 37% from the field with Harriette Mackenzie averaging 15.5 points a game. The Royals meanwhile only shot 30% but did play solid defence, not allowing the Mariners to get into a rhythm, particularly in that second game. Mackenzie Dalphond was their leading scorer averaging 9.5 per game.
Since the loss to the Royals, the Mariners have rattled off 10-wins in a row and will be on the road for the second straight weekend which hasn’t really bothered them with a 6-0 record.
The Royals have also hit their stride since their loss at VIU and have won nine in a row. They have enjoyed the home cooking and are 7-1 on their home floor this season.
These two schools will meet for the final time in the regular season on Saturday at 1:00pm.
Camosun Chargers @ CBC Bearcats – Friday January 31, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The Bearcats will host the Chargers this weekend in a doubleheader with important points up for grabs. The Bearcats currently sit in a second-place tie with the Douglas Royals coming into this weekend. Back in November they swept the Chargers at Camosun with wins of 11 and six points respectively.
They have won 11 games in a row which includes the sweep at Camosun. They shot 30.5% from the field in a pair of gritty road wins with Elissa Vreugdenhil leading the way averaging 21.5 points per game.
The Chargers are heading in the other direction currently on the outside looking in at the playoff picture. They have lost 13 straight but are still only two points out of the final playoff spot. They shot 33.4% against the Bearcats in November with Sevene Grewal averaging 16 points a game.
These schools meet again on Saturday at 1:00pm in their final meeting of the regular season.
Langara Falcons @ Capilano Blues – Friday January 31, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
There are only four points separating these two teams in the standings, but that said, if the playoffs started today, this would be a quarterfinal matchup.
The Blues are currently in fourth place, 12 points behind the third-place spot and as mentioned four points in front of the Falcons. They do own the tiebreaker after sweeping the Falcons back in November. Since turning the calendar, the Blues have lost four straight and further behind the top of the standings and with eight games remaining, they are looking to get back into the win column this weekend. In the series with the Falcons, the Blues won the first meeting by eight then blew them out by 25-points shooting 40.8% in the wins and Mia Parkin led the way averaging 18.5 points per game.
The Falcons didn’t have much push back in the series at Langara shooting 25.7%. They have lost two straight games overall but are looking to not only earn the wins this weekend, but move closer to the Blues in the standings with the playoffs a month away.
Saturday afternoon at 5:00pm, they will meet for the final time in the regular season.
