Women's Week 10 Basketball Preview
A very busy women's basketball schedule this weekend
VIU Mariners @ Okanagan Coyotes – Friday January 24, 5:00pm | WATCH HERE
The top ranked Mariners (13-1) roll into Kelowna this weekend to meet the Coyotes for a pair of games. They have won eight in a row and have completely dismantled teams with the closest margin of victory during this stretch being a 28-point win just before the holidays. They face a team they swept at VIU at the beginning of the season by an average of 26-points and shot 34.8% from the field.
Meanwhile the Coyotes (3-13) were swept last weekend at Langara and are clinging to the final playoff spot by just two points. Friday’s game is the beginning of six in a row at home as they try and take advantage of some home cooking to climb in the standings. During that weekend at VIU earlier this season, the Coyotes did not shoot the ball particularly well at 22.5% and will need to improve in that category if they want to upset the Mariners.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday at 12:00pm in their final meeting of the season.
Capilano Blues @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 24, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The marquee matchup in women’s basketball this weekend has the Royals (11-3) hosting the Blues (7-7) with eight points separating them in the standings.
The Royals are coming off a bye week and sit tied for second place in the PACWEST standings. They have won seven in a row and are only four points back of the top spot in the Conference and are looking to continue their hot play. This is the second weekend meeting of the season with the Blues after they split their doubleheader to open the year. They shot 34.1% against the Blues and Laini Glover was their leading scorer averaging 10.5 points a game.
Coming into this weekend the Blues are looking to turn things around after dropping both games on their home floor last weekend. Against the Royals in October, they shot the ball well at 43% and had balanced scoring led by Sereena Hothi who averaged 15 points a game.
These two schools will meet again on Saturday at 5:00pm.
CBC Bearcats @ Langara Falcons – Friday January 24, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
For the second weekend this season the Bearcats and Falcons will meet with valuable points in the standings up for grabs.
In their first meeting of the season the Bearcats clawed the Falcons in both games at CBC by an average of 23.5 points to open the campaign. They shot 37.7% and Elissa Vreugdenhil was incredible averaging over 24 points a game and 17 boards. They have won nine straight games and are currently tied for second in the standings.
The Falcons are at home for the third consecutive weekend and are on a two-game winning streak after sweeping the visiting Coyotes last weekend. When they faced the Bearcats earlier this season, they shot 29% from the field and will need to find some better looks this weekend to avoid another sweep. They currently hold fifth place in the standings, trailing the fourth-place team by four points.
Saturday afternoon the Bearcats and Falcons meet for the final time during the regular season at 5:00pm.
