Women's Basketball Rewind
A look back at Week 14 of the season
FRIDAY
No Abo, No Problem
The Capilano Blues were missing the PACWEST leading scorer Kirsten Abo on Friday and didn’t seem to miss a beat hammering the Coyotes 71-42.
They shot 41.8% from the field with several players contributing including a game high 28 points from Madeleine Coffin. Teigan Manson finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds and six different scorers hit the scoresheet.
In the fourth quarter the Blues really put the game away outscoring the Coyotes 11-2.
Speaking of the Coyotes they had a terrible time shooting the ball, connecting on only 19% from the field. Ali Martineau led her club with 16 points.
Bearcats Score Tough Road Win
The Bearcats are on the road for the second straight weekend and rallied for a tough victory on Friday night at Douglas 71-68.
They would end up shooting 31% from the field and were led by a pair of double-doubles. Elissa Vreugdenhil was outstanding dropping 18 points and snagged 18 rebounds. She hit two free throws with 1:26 remaining that proved to be the winning baskets as neither team scored the rest of the way. Kagari Tomita added a game high 19 points and 10 boards in their 12th win of the season. They remain four points back of second place.
The Royals had their chances after the free-throws, but two turnovers in two straight possessions didn’t even warrant a shot and they ran out of time finishing with 26 turnovers. As a club they shot 38% from the field led by Anja Tjernagel offensively and her 13 points. Emma Clunas and Mackenzie Dalphond finished with 12 points each in the setback.
Chargers Charging Forward
Three different Chargers scored 12 points each and Allie Brinton grabbed 12 rebounds as the Camosun Chargers went into Langara and beat the Falcons 62-54. They would shoot 31% from the field and were very balanced offensively. The win is their ninth of the campaign and move to within a win of fourth place in the standings.
The Falcons battled back and outscored the Chargers 14-13 in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough in their 10th straight loss. They shot 34% with Davian Tsang dropping a game high 15 points but it was their lack of ball control that would be their undoing with 32 turnovers.
They get another crack at the Chargers on Saturday afternoon.
SATURDAY
Coyotes Upset Blues in Overtime
Saturday afternoon the Okanagan Coyotes used overtime to upset the Capilano Blues in just their third road win of the season. The ‘Yotes outscored the Blues 10-3 in the extra session to win their sixth of the season.
Overall, this game was not an offensively gifted one with both teams shooting under 28%. The winning Coyotes shot 27.8% with four of their five starters reaching double figures led by the 13 points of Ali Martineau who hit a free throw in the dying seconds to force overtime. Elizabeth Henne was solid with 10 points and snatched 16 rebounds.
The Blues turned the ball over 23 times and didn’t shoot well at 22.7% from the field. They were shorthanded in this game with only seven players dressed. Jenna Griffin led the way with a game high 16 points and Teigan Manson chipped in with 15. Barcha Hnizdilova was outstanding on the glass with 19 rebounds and tallied 10 points.
Next week the Coyotes (6-14) will host the Langara Falcons (4-16) in back-to-back games to determine who will clinch the final playoff spot. The Blues (14-6) will visit a very energetic CBC Bearcats (12-10) team with only four points separating them in the standings for second place.
Royals Blast Bearcats
After losing a tight game on Friday night, the Royals came out swinging on Saturday and crushed the Bearcats 86-57 for their 11th win of the season.
They played an outstanding all-around game shooting 44% while holding their Bearcats to 26%. Perhaps most importantly is that they took care of the basketball with only nine turnovers. Offensively Mackenzie Dalphond came off the bench to drop a game high 20 points and Laini Glover was an impact player with 16 points and seven boards.
The Bearcats didn’t shoot the ball well and were led by Grace Park and her 12 points. Elissa Vreugdenhil was held quiet with nine points but did snag 10 rebounds.
Next weekend the Royals (11-11) will enjoy a bye and the Bearcats (12-10) will play their final games of the regular season when they host the Capilano Blues (14-6) in a pair of very important games.
Falcons Snap Losing Streak
It took 10-games but the Langara Falcons finally snapped their lengthy losing streak, beating the visiting Camosun Chargers 57-54. They exploded in the fourth quarter outscoring the Chargers 21-10.
The Falcons kept their playoff hopes alive shooting 32% from the field with Julia Sprott scoring a team high 11 points and was a major factor down the stretch. Katelyn LaFleur added 10 points in the victory, which was the team’s fourth of the season and first since November 24th.
The Chargers fall for the second time in three games after shooting 33% from the field. They looked tired and a bit scattered with time ticking away in the final frame. Rhiannon Ware finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and Sophie Leslie dropped 11 points.
Next weekend the Falcons (4-16) play an important twin bill at Okanagan against the Coyotes (6-14) that will no doubt determine the final playoff spot. The Chargers (9-11) on the other hand will host the front running VIU Mariners (16-4).
