Coach's Comment - Steve Beauchamp
The Douglas Royals women's basketball head coach talks hoops with Ryan Watters
The Douglas Royals women's basketball team finished last year with a PACWEST bronze medal just a couple of weeks before the world was flipped upside down. It was the third time they had medalled in four seasons.
Each one of those PACWEST medals in the last four seasons have come with Steve Beauchamp as the head coach. As a matter of fact in just his first season on the Royals bench he led them to a PACWEST championship title in 2016-2017 and a berth in the CCAA national championship tournament.
Steve is not only the Royals head coach, but the chair of the "Tessa Tournament" in honour of his daughter who he lost to cancer. Each year the Tessa Tournament plays host to around 40 girl's high school teams with the players eligible to apply for the Tessa Beachamp Scholarship which provides financial assistance to the winner who is enrolling in any post-secondary institution.
With the ongoing pandemic Steve and the Tessa Beauchamp Foundation needed to think outside the box to keep the tradition of the scholarship moving forward and still be able to award it without having a tournament on the court.
Steve talks about the outstanding virtual options they implemented this year with Ryan Watters in this PACWEST Coach's Comment.
