The Blues are pleased to announce that Irvan Brar has been appointed as the new head coach of the Blues men's volleyball program.
Brar is an accomplished volleyball professional from Surrey, B.C., with extensive coaching and playing experience, recognized for his dedication to developing youth athletes.
As a UBC alumnus, Irvan set records in all-time points and kills. In 2018, he proudly captained the UBC Thunderbirds to their first national championship in 35 years, marking a standout achievement in his collegiate career. On the international stage, he represented Team Canada at both the junior and senior levels and led the Canadian University Volleyball Team during the Universiade FISU Games in South Korea (2015) and Taiwan (2017).
After a rewarding six-year professional playing career across Germany, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, Irvan experienced significant success in Denmark, securing both Cup and League Championships. Notably, the Cup Championship was the first for his Danish team in 41 years, and he earned MVP honours in both competitions. Following this achievement, he transitioned into coaching, gaining valuable experience with both men's and women's professional teams in Denmark.
Following this, he returned to Canada and founded YST (Yogi Sports Training) in Surrey, focusing on nurturing Canadian talent. He also most recently served as an assistant coach for Capilano University during the 2024-25 season.
Widely respected in the volleyball community, Brar is dedicated to developing the next generation of athletes and is eager to elevate Capilano University’s program as the new head coach of the Capilano Blues men's volleyball team.
The Blues would like to thank Markiel Simpson for his time as head coach during the 2024-25 season. He helped reset the Blues program and put us on a path to future success with a promising recruiting class. We wish Markiel all the best in his future endeavours.
