Royals Play For National Gold
The Douglas Royals meet the Red Deer Kings for men's volleyball supremacy
Douglas Royals vs. Red Deer Kings – Saturday March 8, 5:00pm PST | GOLD MEDAL MATCH
The national champion will be crowned on Saturday night in an all-Royalty battle when the PACWEST champion Royals face the ACAC champion Kings.
Both programs had a bye on Friday following their semi-final win on Thursday and should be well-rested for the title match on Saturday night.
The Royals punched their ticket to the title match with a three-set sweep over the CMU Blazers from Manitoba. They played a dominate match in the sweep winning by set scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-13 led offensively by Marvin Tumusiime and his 11 kills along with Luke Hans, Lucas Sansone and Nik Robbles each adding seven. Elijah Kim was named the Player of the Match quarterbacking the offence and keeping the Blazers defenders off balanced. He had 32 assists, five digs and two aces.
Their opponent will be the Kings who have been virtually untouchable this tournament. On Wednesday they opened up with a three-set sweep over the Providence Pilots, then scored another sweep Thursday taking down the Humber Hawks including a third set score of 25-10.
During the regular season they were 18-1 led by Colby Nemeth who tallied an ACAC high 302 kills and he was named the Player of the Match in Thursday’s semi-final win.
These programs last met in the 2012 national title match with the Kings winning on four-sets.
