Men's Volleyball Regular Season Finale
The regular season in men's volleyball comes to a close this weekend
Douglas Royals @ COTR Avalanche – Friday February 14, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
It’s the final weekend of the regular season in men’s PACWEST volleyball however playoff positioning is still yet to be determined.
The Avalanche come into the weekend needing one match win over the visiting Royals to clinch the first-place seed and potentially set up another match with the Royals next week in a semi-final. They are currently four points up on the VIU Mariners for first with two matches to go, but they have hit their first losing streak of the season and have lost four in a row.
Conversely the Royals have won seven of their last eight and pulled into a third-place tie with the Camosun Chargers who are at CBC this weekend to meet the Bearcats. The school with the better showing this weekend will clinch third-place.
In their first weekend against the Avalanche this season, the Royals dropped a pair of four-setters in November at Douglas.
These two will meet for the final time this regular season on Saturday at 6:00pm (MST).
VIU Mariners @ Capilano Blues – Friday February 14, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
The Mariners are in the postseason, the Blues are out but looking to build upon some late momentum.
Coming into the weekend the Mariners hold down the second seed, just four points behind the first-place COTR Avalanche. Like the other three PACWEST schools that have qualified for the championship tournament, the Mariners are still fighting for positioning. Regardless of where they will finish, they will host the championship tournament next weekend and will play in front of a ruckus crowd on Friday night in a semi-final.
Just because the Blues aren’t in the playoffs, doesn’t mean this will be a cake walk for the Mariners. In November they beat the Blues 3-0 the first night, but then were pushed to a fifth set the next night. Couple that with the Blues playing much better down the stretch and have won two of their last three. They will no doubt play loose and free this weekend with nothing to lose as they close out their schedule.
They will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
Camosun Chargers @ CBC Bearcats – Friday February 14, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This should be an interesting match up this weekend as the Chargers visit the Bearcats in the regular season finale. The Chargers are still fighting for playoff positioning while the Bearcats are hoping to end the season on a high note.
The Chargers have won three of their last four but have struggled away from PISE this year with a 3-5 record. They are currently tied for third place in the standings and just four points out of second-place as the season enters the final weekend. In their last meeting with the Bearcats, they swept them 3-0 and 3-0 in a weekend doubleheader at Camosun in November.
This will be the final weekend of play for the Bearcats who snapped their six-match losing streak last week at Capilano. They are 12 points behind the Chargers in the standings and are playing for pride this weekend with a hint of spoiler as they look to force the Chargers to drop in the standings.
Following Friday night’s match, these two schools will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
