Five Set Friday Night
A pair of thrilling five-set matches with the home teams coming out on top
Douglas Royals 3
VIU Marines 2
This was fun to watch as the hometown Royals earned a hard-fought, five set win over one of the hottest teams in the PACWEST. Neither set was determined by more than four-points.
It was the Royals who opened the match with a thrilling 25-23 win before the Mariners came right back to even it up with a 25-21 advantage.
The Mariners held onto that momentum in the third set and used extra points to take a lead in the match winning 26-24 and moved to within one set of extending their eight-match winning streak. The Royals had other ideas.
On a six-match winning streak of their own, the Royals used the energy from the crowd to fight back and win the fourth set 25-21 forcing a fifth and deciding set.
The final set was intense with both teams not giving up much as they traded punch for punch. In the end the Royals managed to claw back and win 17-15 showcasing how even these two teams are. With the win they move into a third-place tie with the idle Camosun Chargers and still have a match in hand.

Capilano Blues 3
CBC Bearcats 2
This was another exciting five-set thriller as the Blues win their second straight and fourth of the season on Friday night.
It would be the Bearcats who came out swinging, winning the opening set 25-23 to take the lead. The Blues, however, came right back to capture a 25-22 victory to even the match.
They continued that momentum in the third winning 25-18 to take control of the match before the Bearcats bounced back.
In the fourth the Bearcats played a gritty road match and showed heart winning the set 25-21 forcing a fifth and deciding set, the third match to go the distance on Friday night across the entire PACWEST.
As expected, the fifth was extremely tight and exciting. Both teams, though exhausted, battled hard before the Blues found an extra gear and won 15-11 to earn their third win over the Bearcats this year.
These two schools will meet again on Saturday night at 7:00pm to wrap up Week 12 of the regular season. WATCH HERE.
