Men's Week 9 Volleyball Recap
What an exciting weekend of men's volleyball
Clean Avalanche Sweep
The top team in the country, the COTR Avalanche kept their unblemished record in tact with a pair of sweeps over the visiting Capilano Blues this weekend.
On Friday the Avalanche recorded set wins of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-15 taking the fight right to the Blues and setting the weekend tone. They followed that up on Saturday with another quick sweep recording set wins of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17.
They remain undefeated and have already clinched a playoff spot. They will enjoy a bye next weekend before heading to the Island and play four matches in four days against the VIU Mariners (9-5) and Camosun Chargers (7-7).
On the other side, the Blues (2-12) head home for their final six matches of the season and welcome the Chargers beginning on Friday.
Mariners Collect Hard-Fought Sweep
The second-place Mariners came out flying on Friday night at CBC and recorded a three-set sweep with set wins of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-15 for their eighth win of the campaign.
Saturday’s rematch was a different story. The Bearcats tried to set the tone early winning the first set 25-19 to take control of the match. However, the Mariners came right back in the second to tie the match with a 25-18 victory. That didn’t seem to bother the home side because in the third set the Bearcats blasted back with a 25-22 win and had ideas of an upset on their mind…but wait…
In the fourth the Mariners would not be denied and scored some timely points en route to a 25-21 win setting up a winner take all fifth set.
Points went back and forth as the schools matched punch for punch. However, in the end the Mariners would prevail with the comeback victory winning 15-13 to sweep the weekend for their sixth straight win.
Next weekend the Mariners (9-5) will enjoy a bye week and the Bearcats (3-11) will welcome the Douglas Royals (7-7) for a pair of matches.
A Royal Flush
What a weekend for the surging Royals, heading into Camosun and earning a weekend sweep, moving in a third-place tie.
On Friday, the visitors dropped the first set 25-19 but quickly turned the table. The second set was extremely entertaining that saw points go back and forth until the Royals tied the match with a 27-25 win and never looked back.
In the third they took control winning 25-16, then continued their hot road play winning 25-18 to seal the deal.
Then on Saturday the Royals picked up right where they left off winning the first two sets by the same score of 25-17. The third set was the best set of the entire weekend across the Conference as the teams battled extremely hard with Chargers avoiding the clean sweep winning a marathon 33-31.
With both teams exhausted, they were even for most of the fourth set before the Royals took charge and captured a 25-22 victory to win the match and ultimately move into a tie with the Chargers in the standings.
Next week the Royals (7-7) will visit the CBC Bearcats (3-11) looking to extend their four-game winning streak. The Chargers (7-7) have lost six straight and head to Capilano to meet the Blues (2-12) next weekend.
