Men's Volleyball Preview: Week 9
Plenty of bumping, setting and spiking on the docket this weekend
Capilano Blues @ COTR Avalanche – Friday January 17, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
The undefeated Avalanche put their unblemished record on the line this weekend when they host the Blues in a pair of matches that features schools that book end the Conference standings.
The Avalanche, who have clinched a playoff spot, have been rolling in the regular season showing they can win in several different ways including an easy three-set sweep but have also found a way to win in a five-set thriller. They meet a Blues team for the second and final time this year after sweeping the weekend at Capilano at the end of November winning in three and four sets respectively.
Coming into this weekend the Blues have lost four straight and are six points back of the final playoff spot in the standings. This is their final road trip of the season as they will finish the year with six in a row at home and a golden opportunity to gain some ground in the playoff hunt.
These schools will wrap up Week 9 on Saturday in the back half of the doubleheader at 3:00pm.
Douglas Royals @ Camosun Chargers – Friday January 17, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
With four weeks to go in the season, only four points separates these two schools in the standings as they meet for the final time in the regular season.
After losing both matches last weekend, the Chargers find themselves in a second-place tie in the PACWEST standings as they host the Royals this weekend. In mid-November the Chargers swept the Royals at Douglas in five and four sets respectively, adding to the excitement for this coming weekend. They have been very good at home with a 5-1 record and looking to build off that momentum.
The Royals opened 2025 last weekend with a convincing clean sweep of the visiting Blues to move them into the final playoff spot in the standings. They hit the road for the next four matches and are hoping to keep that momentum from last weekend into their visit to Camosun and advance even further in the fight for playoff positioning.
Following Friday’s match, the schools will meet again on Saturday at 3:00pm.
VIU Mariners @ CBC Bearcats – Friday January 17, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This weekend the Mariners and Bearcats meet for their second weekend doubleheader of the season after the Bearcats earned a sweep in mid-November at VIU.
Oddly enough, that weekend sweep was the last time the Bearcats won a match due to a bye before the holiday break and dropping both matches last weekend at COTR. They have only played two meaningful matches in a month and will need to find their grove early when they meet the rejuvenated Mariners squad. They are currently on the outside looking in at the playoff scenario, four points back of the final spot.
The surging Mariners played very well last weekend and were able to sweep the visiting Chargers moving into a second-place tie. They have won four straight and are playing with confidence as they head to CBC this weekend.
These two schools will meet again on Saturday afternoon for their final match-up of the regular season.
