Men's Volleyball Friday Night Recap
The Avalanche, Mariners and Royals each win
COTR Avalanche 3
CBC Bearcats 2
The top ranked team in the nation, the Avalanche, continued their winning ways as both they and the visiting Bearcats opened the second half of the season.
The Avalanche took the advantage first, winning the opening set 25-17 shaking off some holiday rust after not playing a meaningful match since November 30th. The second set turned into a marathon with the Bearcats refusing to roll over to the Avs. They would push the top team and used extra points to even the match in a very entertaining 32-30 win.
That setback didn’t seem to phrase the Avalanche however as they took momentum right back winning the third set 25-20. Then in the fourth, again the Bearcats didn’t go quietly as they pushed the Avs before the hometown squad took the match 25-23 winning their 11th straight contest and remain undefeated in the standings.

VIU Mariners 3
Camosun Chargers 2
The fans in Nanaimo were treated to plenty of volleyball on Friday night. After the women’s match lasted five sets, the men were not to be outdone, extending to a fifth set of their own.
The Mariners took advantage by winning the first set 25-22 coming out hot as both schools opened the second half. The visiting Chargers, however, came right back in the second set, needed extra points but would eventually tie the match winning 26-24.
They used that momentum in the third set as well beating the home side 25-20 taking control of the match, but not so fast. The Mariners came right back in the fourth with the schools’ trading points, before they evened the match winning 25-22, forcing a fifth.
With the night getting late in Nanaimo these two schools put on another incredible performance in the decisive set which ended in a Mariners 15-12 victory, with both teams exhausted. The win would be the Mariners third straight while the Chargers have lost three in a row.
The rematch is set for 3:00pm on Saturday, WATCH HERE.
Dougals Royals 3
Capilano Blues 0
The hometown Royals came out with something to prove on Friday night as they dominated the visiting Blues as both teams opened the second half of the schedule.
In the first set the Royals threw everything they had at the opposition, and they earned a 25-15 victory. They kept that momentum going in the second, winning that set 25-15 as well and took the lead heading into the third.
The young Blues roster battled back and showed some grit, however in the end the Royals were just too much, and the home side completed the sweep with a 25-23 victory.
Saturday night they will meet again at Douglas with a 7:00pm start. WATCH HERE.
