Takeru Kaku of the Langara Falcons is the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer Player of the Year.
Kaku, an exceptional centre-back, distinguished himself as a dominant leader on the field and an invaluable asset to the Falcons' remarkable season. His outstanding performance on defense and his knack for timely goals helped propel the Falcons to the top of the PACWEST conference, securing a first-place finish with an impressive 8-4 record. As captain, Kaku organized the backline exceptionally, leading Langara to the fewest goals allowed in the league (10) and achieving six shutouts. The Falcons posted a +11 goal differential, the only positive in PACWEST, while also leading the league in goals scored (21).
James Kryger, CCAA convenor, noted, “Kaku’s work ethic, determination, and leadership shone brightly all season. As a central figure in the Langara backline, he set a high standard for excellence, guiding his teammates to a PacWest Title while achieving the lowest goals against in the league. As team captain, his on-field counterparts recognized his PACWEST success when he was named Player of the Year—a testament to his leadership and skill as a center-back. Kaku's influence extends beyond his defensive prowess; he also made his mark offensively, netting three goals during the regular season. This recognition is truly well-deserved, as his impact, both on and off the field and within the Langara community, exemplifies what it means to be a CCAA Player of the Year.”
Off the field, Kaku demonstrated exceptional leadership as he guided nine first-year players through their transition into collegiate soccer and life as student-athletes. As an international student from Japan majoring in business management, Kaku has balanced the demands of academics and athletics. His leadership and dedication extended beyond Langara; he represented Team Japan at the 43rd Nations Cup, helping them secure a third-place finish in a highly competitive field.
"Kaku came into the pre-season fit and ready to lead by example. His commitment to his teammates and the program has set a standard of excellence for our team," remarked Marc Rizzardo, Langara Falcons Head Coach. "As an international student, Kaku has excelled in adapting to life in Canada, balancing his academics and athletics, and fostering strong relationships within our team."
