Men's Soccer Season Finale
The men's PACWEST soccer season regular season finale
The men’s PACWEST soccer season closed this past weekend after dealing with very tough weather conditions.
SATURDAY
Capilano Blues 2
VIU Mariners 1
The Blues scored a pair of first half goals and hung on for the 2-1 win on Saturday despite a late push by the hometown Mariners.
The PACWEST leading scorer Sebastian Cirotto opened the scoring with his eighth of the campaign in the 27th minute. Then just before halftime the Blues would strike again when Andrew Cerqueira scored in the extra time. It is a goal that would stand up as the game winner.
Just two minutes into the second half Brian Bland tallied his second of the season getting the Mariners on the board, and cutting the lead in half. However, it was as close as they would come as the Blues locked down their defence the rest of the way.
Langara Falcons 1
Douglas Royals 0
With the win the Falcons have clinched first place in the standings and receive an automatic bye into the PACWEST gold medal game coming up this weekend.
Due to Saturday’s storm the Falcons table staff were unable to accurately keep statistics for this game. They will be available at a later date.
SUNDAY
Douglas Royals 2
Langara Falcons 0
After a scoreless first half and their season on the line, the Royals pressed in the second half and it paid off.
In the 70th minute Justin Pena tallied his second of the season, a goal that would stand as the game winner. They would add some insurance in the 78th minute when Matteo Falcone answered the bell for his fourth of the campaign.
Keeper Matthew Miller made three saves to earn the clean sheet.
Capilano Blues 1
VIU Mariners 1
There are no statistics from this game at this time. They will be made available at a later date.
With only a tie, coupled with a Royals win, the Mariners and Royals finish the season with an identical record head-to-head and their goals for and against each other are also the same. To break the tie for the playoffs the PACWEST looks at goals differential and the Royals are better in that category with a -4, compared to a Mariners -6 which means the Royals have clinched the final playoff spot and the Mariners season is over.
Next week the Royals and Blues will meet in a semi-final with the winner taking on the Langara Falcons for gold.
